The latest results are in, and, unfortunately, we have some returning winners from the year before (and the year before that). “123456” is, yet again, sitting high and mighty at the top of the list in the number one spot. This is the fifth year in the row. Just below that, “password” comes in at second place. Shaking things up (but not really) is “123456789” in third place. Rounding out fourth and fifth is “12345678” and “12345”.
These really are terrible.
SplashData is the house of password management software SplashID, and while these lists are generally fun to look at and poke fun at, it’s a cruel reminder that some folks just don’t take this sort of thing seriously in the slightest. For whatever reasons they might have. Just a little effort can go a long way to keeping you and your data safe.
Here’s the full top 10 list, which certainly doesn’t get any better:
123456
password
123456789
12345678
12345
111111
1234567
sunshine
qwerty
iloveyou
The full list includes 100 total entries. There are other terrible entries, including “soccer” at 97, “hockey” at 89, and “donald” at 23. I’m honestly a little surprised that fortnite didn’t make the list.
