It has been rumored for quite some time that Apple is working on adopting mini-LED backlighting for future devices. That includes the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, and even the iPad Pro. And now a new supply chain report aims to corroborate those expectations, at least for one laptop model.

In a report from DigiTimes, the publication cites unnamed sources within the supply chain that Apple is working on two different MacBook Pro models with mini-LED displays. The report says that the company will unveil not only a 14-inch model, but also a refreshed 16-inch variant as well.

The report itself is primarily focused on a company called Radiant Opto-Electronics, which supplies backlight units to a variety of companies out there. Which will apparently include Apple.

Per the report: Apple is expected to unveil 14- and 16-inch miniLED-backlit MacBook Pro models in second-half 2021, with Radiant to be the exclusive supplier of BLUs and Quanta Computer to be an OEM, the sources noted.

This report says that Apple is aiming for the “second-half” of 2021, and there isn’t much else to go on in that regard. However, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has said in the past that the expectation is these new computers will see the light of day in the third quarter of this year. So, by the end of September, if Kuo’s expectations pan out.

There are also rumors that a MacBook Air model with a mini-LED display is on the way, too.

Are you looking forward to Apple’s transition to mini-LED displays at some point in the future? Or do you hope the company sticks with OLED a bit longer?
